As Wide as the Sea - Jez Dolan - 2021

Screen Print on Hand Torn Pages

30cm x 21cm

The artwork comprises two separate screen-printed, hand-torn pages. Each page 210 x 297 mm (approx.). Signed & dated lower right corner, numbered lower left. Printed on Zerkall 145 gsm mould-made paper, cream smooth using Lascaux Studio acrylic inks, with hand-drawn additions in pencil. Some editions carry a watermark. Edition of 31 +2 AP’s.

The work was made as part of Jez’s artist-in-residence programme with the exhibition: Derek Jarman – PROTEST! at Manchester Art Gallery (Dec 2nd 2021 – April 10th 2022). The work utilises two pages from The Polari Bible (Leviticus Ch.1 – 3) and a quote from Derek Jarman. The text in (Ultramarine) references the artist Yves Klein, and his influence on Jarman, their shared interest in the void, the spiritual, and the power of colour, specifically blue.

Jez Dolan, a boundary-pushing queer artist, challenges norms through his provocative work in performance and visual arts. With a focus on LGBTQ+ themes, he captivates audiences with his bold and thought-provoking creations. Dolan fearlessly advocates for inclusivity and diversity in the art world, sparking important conversations.
