This banner was a development piece for a commission from The Tate Collective for LGBTQIA+ history month. A response to a 1931 photograph by Claude Cahun, “I Extend My Arms”, it is a celebration of the queer community’s ability to unite together in times of hardship. In Cahun’s image, their arms emerge from the rock, worn like a costume.

The scene’s harsh rigidity is put into flux, animated through the body’s presence and the suggestion of motion. This banner is a call for tenderness, and a reminder that through collective action, we can break down the structures which work against us - even those which initially appear set in stone.

Freya playfully constructs camp, queer and energetic worlds through textiles and sculpture. Joy emanates from their work, fostering a connection with the viewer through tender, silly and sensual tactility. Using art as a tool for social change is essential to Freya and they often facilitate banner making workshops for protests, campaigns and communities.
