This quilted banner has emerged from a desire for community and closeness. Genderless figures are caught in motion as they fall through a ring of mushrooms, framed by ribbons.
Fungi’s biological nature is inherently queer; they possess qualities which refuse neat classification into the categories of plant and animal, upending and subverting binary concepts of nature.
Often, they are misunderstood by the mainstream as cryptic and perverse. Their powerful communication networks and ability to subsist in minimal conditions echo our community’s resilience, now and throughout history.
The fairy ring of mushrooms is a symbol of good luck for the queer figures. The ribbons which frame the piece take their shape from the stained glass windows of Unity Hall, a socialist institute in Nelson, Lancashire. Built when socialism was just taking shape, it represents the powerful history of people standing up and fighting for their rights.
Freya playfully constructs camp, queer and energetic worlds through textiles and sculpture. Joy emanates from their work, fostering a connection with the viewer through tender, silly and sensual tactility. Using art as a tool for social change is essential to Freya and they often facilitate banner making workshops for protests, campaigns and communities.
